.htaccess files

Is there any way to limit where .htaccess files effect? For example, I want to fix my .htaccess file to edit the icons used in apache for certain filetypes in the root. However, I don't want this to effect directories of different subdomains,etc. Is there a way to achieve this without having to put another .htaccess file in certain directories in order to override it?

BTW, I'm happy that Bihira finally seems to have a reasonable uptime.. not too long ago it would go down atleast once a day. Not sure if it was because I was on a bad server or whatever, but it's fine now. :)

I suck at .htaccess coding, but that's primarly how .htaccess works.
